SALLY AND THE GREAT BAMBOOZLE: A TRUE STORY

  • I wish I didn’t know now what I didn’t know then (Bob Seger)
    • This video is a culmination of 20 Years of efforts in the search and verification of te rarest Hot Wheel in the world, the 1969 VW VOLKSWAGON BEACH BOMB. Often called “The Holy Grail”, Collectors will spend a lifetime looking for this rare beauty and oftentimes have unexpected results. This is the true story of Sally and Blossom a RLBB and SLBB respectively. These two vehicles also provided the impetus for the writing of “HOT WHEELS TREASURE HUNTERS GUIDE: 2013 The Where, When and How of hot Wheels Treasure Hunts. If it were not for the adventure that “Sally” took me on, this Guide may never have been written.

I would like to thank Bruce Pascal from Hot Wheels as well as Ken from Rhonasplace for their help in going above and beyond when these vehicles went to auction on EBay! What would you do if you found the rarest Hot Wheel in the world?!

FIND TREASURE HUNTS 7.13.13 PT. 2 1969 HOT WHEELS VOLKSWAGEN BEACH BOMB REAR LOADER VS. BRIGHT VISION VARS!

July 14, 2013 in 1969 VW VOLKSWAGEN BEACH BOMB RLBB

PT. 2 VW VOLKSWAGEN BEACH BOMB VS. BV VARS!

NOTE: THIS BEFORE I KNEW WHAT I LEARNED IN PART 3…

PART 2/2: This video takes a longer detailed look at the differences between an actual VW Beach Bomb Vs. the Imitation Bright Vision (BV)….My Webiste, findtreasurehunts.com provides a detailed listing of 35 – 40 differences between the actual prototype and the Bright Vision Replicas…to think that there’s 150 differences!

This is a video of the Holy Grail of Hot Wheels, the rarest Hot Wheel in the world, “The 1969 VOLKSWAGEN BEACH BOMB” Rear Loader Prototype. It is said that there have only been 25 ever made. then again, I saw a comment that 200 were given to Mattel Employees to “test”. It is said that one sold in 2000 or 2001 for $72,000. It was also rumored that a rare prototype was traded for a fully loaded ’13 Dodge Viper at the Las Vegas Die Cast Collector’s Convention in 2013. On the back of a VW Beetle Hot Wheels Card in 2007, a Fun fact said a VW Rear Loader Beach Bomb could be worth well over $100, 000. One could spend a lifetime looking and then never find it while some find it only to be disillusioned by the Bright Vision Imitation…And some really DO find it! It is said that prior to the release of the Bright Vision Imitation VW Beach Bomb, a number of gentlemen sat in a room with Michael Strauss (whom I hope to meet!) with his 9 Original Beach Bomb Prototypes. No pictures were allowed but notes were proliferous. In those notes, they were able to identify 150 differences between the Bright Vision and his original Prototypes. Would love to have been a fly on the wall for that discussion. I discovered this Hot Wheel about 12 Years ago near san Francisco. Bought it for $20 from a retailer who was selling a Hot Wheels Estate he had just purchased from an Ex-Mattel Employee. As I looked at this collection, I remember seeing the 1968 Camaro in enamel white in the package, I browsed the Heavyweights in the package and drooled at every other Redline in the original package, one could only dream of owning one of these choice collectibles. Priced far out of my meager salary income, I chose to browse the store. On the opposite side of the store, locked behind glass doors, sitting next to the Star Wars toys of the ’70′s, was this 1969 VW Beach Bomb. With my hands visibly shaking, I timidly approached the retailer and inquired. He nodded, walking slowly, unlocked the doors and let me hold it. My mouth was dry, perspiration ran down my forehead until I cautiously asked him of the price. He thought about it a moment and said “$20″. I remember thinking that I could certainly afford that but I didn’t want to jump at it too quickly. I hesitated and he said, “I’ll pay the tax.” And, from the moment that he locked the glass doors back up until we completed the transaction, it seemed to take hours as if time slowed to a crawl. It wasn’t until I walked out the door that I could say it was mine. I think I slept with it next to my bed every night for a year before I put it away for safe keeping. I didn’t realize it would take me 12 years to verify it was real. I tried writing Mattel but couldn’t get decent pictures of it. Trust me, they had to be perfect pictures! I couldn’t afford to go to a Hot Wheels Convention. And, part of me thought it was an imitation. I didn’t trust my instincts when I first saw it. The problem was that I could never get a close up of this thing. And, 12 years later, I was doodling with my phone and a Hot wheels Rigor Motor Mystery Car was sitting on the counter and my HTC took a perfect picture of it….That’s when I took the VW Beach Bomb out of its hiding place. Since I couldn’t get a true Rear Loader to compare it to and having the original side Loader, I compared it to the imitations (Mostly Bright Vision) and stumbled across one base of the 2000 Pink VW Beach Bomb. This is always super secret as no one wants another reproduction debacle, But, once this was compared to the BV’s, I tried to find the 150 differences between the imitation and the Real Holy Grail. I was able to find 40 Differences…a far shot from 150 but I didn’t have 9 Prototypes to compare the differences Here is the first of 2 parts. This is less detailed than the 2nd Video but you’ll get the point! This video compares the Bright Vision models to this Metal Flake Red Beach Bomb. See my website findtreasurehunts.com for even more information. I am also the author of “TREASURE HUNTERS GUIDE: 2013 The Where, When and How of Hot Wheels Treasure Hunts.”. The hard copy is available on EBay. Although I find over 500 Treasure Hunts a year, I would trade them all 100 Times for another Holy Grail! I’m always open to comments…Thanks again! GLTH! (Good Lucking Treasure Hunting!) Paul Sanders

The ultimate Treasure Hunt is the Holy Grail of Hot Wheels, the 1969 VW Volkswagen Beach Bomb. The mostly highly soft after vehicle of all Hot Wheels has always been buried in controversy. How does one know if they have the real thing? Bright Vision first sold Replicas of the VW Beach Bomb in 2002 for $400 per vehicle. There were mainly 4 variation releases of this Bright Vision Beach Bomb. It is said that before production, the creators of the Beach Bomb sat in a room with Michael Strauss and his 9 original Prototype Beach Bombs. No pictures were allowed but notes were taken on 150 differences between the BV (Bright Vision) and the original prototype. They were right!
Shortly, after 12 years of owning this 1969 VW Beach Bomb, I am releasing it to the public. For years I had this and had no idea how to authenticate it. Thank goodness for the people who kept the Bright Vision Website going. It has a great amount of detail on these cars and ironically, it was created due to people knocking of his imitation (a great one at that). For instance, the site speaks of the SAL Variation imitation whereby the manufacturers in China misspelled “FOREIGN” as “FDREIGN” and “INC” is spelled “ING”…oops. Pretty bad knockoff. In that, due to the great pictures on this site, I was able to look at my discovery and verify it to the BV Beach Bomb. When they said there were 150 differences, I’m sure they weren’t kidding! I found 4o differences, many obvious and many subtle, that gave great weight to the argument. My eyes were sore and my experience limited as it’s not everyday that you stumble upon “the Holy Grail”
Please see my following videos of a visual of the real deal versus the “imitation”. personally, I believe Bright Vision did a wonderful job on the replicas and wish they would continue production…sadly, they were out of business in 2003 while the BV Version flooded EBay. They certainly confused the market as many second hand owners were “taken” after realizing they had an imitation as opposed to the real thing.
